Contrary to what seems to be the main problem at the ears, the ear is not large, but the parts of the ears that should be curled are flat. This results in a larger than normal angle between the ear lobe and head. The ear is curled forward. Especially the upper part of the ear lobe is smoother than normal. You should decide with your physician if you are a suitable patient for this operation after a physical examination carried out by your physician.
What is the ideal age for this operation?
Unlike all other aesthetic operations, Prominent Ear Aesthetics can be done in pre-school age. The ear development of a child of 6 years old is largely completed. A child in these ages will be protected from being psychologically traumatized at school by being treated before the school begins. Prominent Ear Operation can be applied for all age groups after 6 years as well.
What is the approximate duration of the operation?
This operation is usually performed under hospital conditions and under local anesthesia. It can also be applied under sedation or general anesthesia depending on the age and wish of the patient. The average duration of operation is 1.5 hours. After surgery, the patient may leave the hospital on the same day. The first 2-3 days after surgery, there is a medical dressing that closes the patient's ears. After this medical dressing is taken away, the patient uses a printed bandage (tennis bandage) for about 20 days on average.
Flap ear aesthetic
Flap ear aesthetic is applied to make ears closer to the head, shape missing folds or downsize bigger ears. The proper age is the end of ear development. At the age of five, ears are considered to have completely developed and the sooner the operation, the less the child is challenged with social problems. However, the average age of flap ear operation is above 20 in our country. The reason is that families do not notice or care much about the condition in childhood. There is no difference in terms of operation and risks between ages 5 and 20.
You shouldn’t insist on surgical operation unless your child wishes for it. Children who are uncomfortable with the shape of their ears are generally more cooperative during the operation.
The physician will examine the condition and recommend the most efficient technique at the first session. Information about the preparation process will be offered.
Flap ear operation can be rendered easily under local anesthesia in clinical setting. However, the physician can recommend operation under general anesthesia at the hospital, then you need to stay at the hospital for one night.
Flap ear operation generally takes one and a half or two hours, or longer in complicated cases. Adults and children can walk around and go home after surgery.
The patient’s head will be bandaged to help restructuring and recovery. Pain can occur in the ears for a few days and can be relieved with pain killers. Bandage will be renewed after 2 days. The second bandage will be removed on the fourth day and you will be given a head band (tennis band-bandana) to use for 24 hours a day during the first week and especially at night for the following 3 weeks. Stitches are generally removed in one week or self soluble stitches are used.
Any activity which would bend the ear should be avoided for one and a half months. Most adults can go back to work in 4-7 days. Children can go back to school after 7 days but need to be careful in their activities. You can ask help from the teacher to care for the child for a couple of weeks.
When rendered by a qualified and experienced physician, complications are minor and very rare. However, surgical risks and specific complications can occur as in every surgical operation. A small portion of patients can have blood clot in the ear (between the ear skin and the cartilage). This clot can disappear on its own or can be drained with a needle.
Rarely, an infection can develop to cause scar tissue in the ear cartilage. These infections are generally treated with antibiotics and rarely the infected region needs to be drained with surgical operation.
It should be noted that the purpose in aesthetic operations is not to reach the perfect level, but to reach a better condition. Do not expect two ears will be the same, absolute symmetry is not possible and is unnatural. The chance of satisfaction increases if you discuss your expectations with the physician before the operation.
